Golf at the Olympics

One of the world’s oldest games, golf, is making it back to the Summer Olympics after several years of absence.

Golf was included in Summer Olympics in 1900 and 1904 Summer Olympic games. The 1900 games held in Paris included men’s and women’s individual events. Men’s event Gold won by the US and Silver and Bronze went to Great Britain. All medals for the women’s event won by the US. Twenty two golfers representing four nations participated in the 1900 games. During the 1904 games only men’s individual and men’s team games were included. The 1904 games held in St. Louis men’s individual Gold went to Canada, and Silver and Bronze were won by the US. All three medals for the men’s team were won by the US. 77 golfers from the US and Canada participated in the 1904 games. So, US won 10 medals followed by Great Britain (2) and Canada (1) during the 1900 and 1904 games.

At the IOC session in Copenhagen in October 2009, the International Olympic Committee decided to reinstate golf at the 2016 and 2020 Summer Olympics. The 2016 Summer Olympics will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and the venue for the 2020 games has not been selected.
